Believing
in the people
Faithful started to crowd the Pentecostal
Assemblies of God church in Nyahururu around 11.00 am. This happens
every Sunday for a good reason and amongst them this particular Sunday
were staff from St. Martin. The staff received this invitation to the
church as a result of an induction conducted for church leaders within
Nyahururu into the work of St. Martin. The Pentecostal Assemblies of
God church leader felt that his experience should be extend to his
congregation.
The staff shared on their personal experiences and how
their encounter with the poor has changed their lives. A case was
shared of a girl who was raped by her employer and conceived. She
delivered in a government hospital and she had nowhere to go with her
child. Two of the church members volunteered to host the girl and the
child. This was a challenge to the staff to continue believing in the
people and for the church to refocus on their faith.
“There are
many gifted and generous people who have something to offer for the
common good and particularly to those who are vulnerable, but we have
the tendency to think that we have to do it ourselves, while at the
same time we feel unable to do so. We feel helpless in many situations
and forget that we have brothers and sisters who could assist us and
who have special gifts to serve others.” (Quoted from Sharing Talents and Resources: An
African experience of promoting solidarity in the community. Ans van
