Sharing talents and resources
An African
Experience of Promoting Solidarity in the Community
Working amidst
vulnerable groups of people in Nyandarua
and Laikipia districts in Kenya, St. Martin Catholic Social Apostolate
developed a unique approach: ONLY THROUGH COMMUNITY.
Rather than assisting vulnerable people directly, the organisation
initiated a movement in the community of hundreds of volunteers, who
feel inspired to give a hand to the less fortunate in their
neighbourhood.
Volunteers of
St. Martin undergo a process of formation
in which the "HEART" (the motivation and drive) as well as the "HEAD"
(the competence) is taken care of through spiritual and technical
training courses.
Interestingly,
in their work with the vulnerable, the
St. Martin community eventually comes to a new insight: the poor and
the vulnerable are not just a problem, but they can be resource as
well: they help the community grow in love and solidarity.
A booklet that
enthusiastically describes the identity of an organization, which tries
to respond to socio-economic problems in a way that is rather
distinctive among other efforts.
